Rachael Sage

Rachael Sage is a romantic for the twenty-first century. This self-taught singer/songwriter/pianist is a musician who looks for the beauty in the grotesque, the spiritual in the mundane, and who believes in "the inherently psychedelic nature of most things in general...if you squint a little." Her specialty: lush, ethnic pop songs that are as catchy as they are emotionally insightful.

A self-described "mystical-realist," Rachael is an extremely prolific lyricist and musician, composing sensual, ethnically-tinged pop primarily on piano or, if none is on hand, on a variety of local East Village cafe napkins. "I write songs about everything: what I read in the newspaper, what's happening in my romantic--or unromantic life, a difficult situation a friend has confided to me...Basically, I'm a creative venus-flytrap," she admits with menace, and no color, phrase, fabric (she hand-paints much of her clothing) or conversation she's overheard seems to be safe from her artistic consumption.

A firm believer in the supremacy of melody over negativity, Rachael has spent much of her musical life refining strong hooks and creative song-structures that anchor her unique and compelling writing and vocal abilities. Rachael plays piano with a distinctive, classically-influenced style, accented by arpeggios and romantic flourishes.

Inspired by an eclectic mix of influences (including Carole King, Elvis Costello, The Indigo Girls and Gershwin as well as elements of Irish, Russian and Middle Eastern music), Rachael creates a unique combination of poetry and melody which is slightly unsettling yet soothing. Her passion for poetry and "for the way words, like people, have more impact sometimes when they just kind of run into each other without stopping to see if they make sense" is a trademark that draws the listener in, keeps them interested and, ultimately, separates Rachael from the rest of the singer/songwriter pack.

A two-time winner of the ASCAP Pop Songwriting Contest, Rachael was also chosen as a finalist in the 1997 Discmakers Independent Music World Series, and has charted in the Top 30 on college radio stations nationwide. She and her hand-painted keyboard continue to mesmerize New York City audiences at such clubs as Arlene Grocery, Hotel Galvez, CB's Gallery, Mercury Lounge, The Fez and The Sidewalk Cafe.
