The Crisis Center for South Suburbia:
The Crisis Center for South Suburbia is a non-profit community organization. It was founded in 1978 by a small group of concerned community members. Over the past twenty years, the Crisis Center has demonstrated its ability to develop and implement comprehensive, cost effective programs that not only support the victim but also address the societal issues, which allow domestic violence to continue. The goal of the Crisis Center is to improve the ability of battered women and children to leave violent homes and enhance effective and appropriate responses to domestic violence by the legal, medical and social systems. To accomplish its goals the Crisis Center provides the following services:
A 24-hour Hotline 708/429-SAFE;
Emergency residential shelter for up to 35 women and their children who are victims of domestic violence;
Individual and group counseling for victims and their children, both residents of the shelter and members of the community;
Free support groups and classes covering such areas as job readiness training, parenting, living skills, and legal issues;
Children's counseling, developmental activities and services;
Dating violence education and prevention program;
Intervention program for abusers;
Court and Hospital Advocacy Programs.
In the last year, the Crisis Center has provided:
7,271 nights of shelter to over 940 women and children
8,198 hours of women's counseling and assistance
3,755 students, 4,570 community members, 198 criminal
justice professional and 279 medical providers received
educational services
4,479 hours of court advocacy.
