STATISTICS ON WOMEN AND HIV:

· 84% of women infected with HIV are between the ages of 15 and 44

· As of 1995, women were the fastest growing group of people infected with HIV

· Three-fourths (77%) of AIDS cases reported among women in 1994 occurred among black and Hispanic women.

· The number of AIDS cases among women is doubling every 1 to 2 years

· In 1992, for the first time in the US, heterosexual contact replaced injection drug use as the leading source of HIV infection for women.

· Only 25.5% of women with multiple partners always use condoms with their primary partner; only 34.1% always use them with secondary partners.

· As of June 1996, 36% of reported HIV infection cases among women were attributed to heterosexual contact; 25% were attributed to injection drug use; 36% risk not reported or identified

· AIDS is the third leading cause of death among U.S. women ages 25-44

· AIDS is the number one cause of death in women ages 25-44 in 15 major U.S. cities

 

STATISTICS ON MEN AND HIV:

· One out of every 100 men in the U.S. is HIV positive

· HIV infection is the leading cause of death among U.S. men ages 25-44

· At the end of 1995, men who have sex with men accounted for only 51% of the cumulative total of AIDS cases.

· As of June 1996, 44% of reported HIV infection cases among men were attributed to men who have sex with men; 29% were attributed to injection drug use; 23% risk not reported or identified

 

GENERAL STATISTICS:

· AIDS is the leading cause of death in all Americans aged 25-44

· One American dies of AIDS every 13 minutes

· African Americans are being diagnosed with AIDS at a rate six times faster than that of whites.

· 25% of all new HIV infections in the U.S. are estimated to occur in young people ages 13-21

· Nearly 2 Americans between ages 13-21 are infected with HIV every hour of every day
