Dates Appearing: July 19 - 25
Current Release: Autour De Lucie

Charles Aznavour, Serge Gainsbourg, Francoise Hardy, Jacques Dutronc...a small, very select group of quality singer-songwriters who have two things in common: (1) they reached the peak of their creative powers at least thirty years ago, and (2) they are French. In inspiring songwriters and music lovers the world over with their melodies and, especially in the case of Gainsbourg, their inventive arrangements, the first three have also been used as a yardstick by which to measure the ability of subsequent generations of French artists. And guess what? Yep, they just don't make 'em like that anymore, at least as far as our keenly trained foreign ears are concerned.

Parisian quartet AUTOUR DE LUCIE meet this historic challenge with an album of quintessential guitars 'n strings-laden pop. L'Echappee Belle was originally released in France in the autumn of 1994 on the cool independant label Le Village Vert and attracted a constant stream of rave reviews (their book of press clippings is almost too heavy to lift) as word quickly got round that this band was pretty special. In combining the classic French pop heritage with musical influences from their own youth such as The Pale Fountains/Shack, The La's, and Everything But The Girl, the group succeeded in creating a dreamy, classy and (dare we say it!) timeless album that deserves success further afield. Wearing their influences loud and proud, they even went to Liverpool and had svengali figure Michael (God) Head from the aforementioned Shack produce a song with them.

They took their music out to the provinces of France during 1995 and participated at several major European festivals showing that they could cut the mustard live as well as in the studio. They are currently preparing for their first visit to Japan where their Bardot looks and pop hooks already have the kids in a lather.
