ONE PEACH OF A DAY posted Friday, August 1, 1997 Atlanta, GA 7:30PM EDTThe second act on the village stage today was New Yorker Alana Davis. Davis played acoustic guitar with partner Adam. She sang her blues tinged songs for a partially seated audience of about 200 hundred people. The crowd listened attentively and swayed to Davis's lovely voice. At the end of her set Davis announced the September release of her debut CD "Blame It On Me" on Elektra records. She told the audience gathered that "it would be really great if you bought the CD." Kelly Willis and later Abra Moore played to a large crowd from their stage which is on the massive lawn of the venue. A sea of people walked through the walkways or sat on the grass in the hot sun listening to the second stage acts. The crowd was receptive yet relaxed from their seated position in front of the raised stage. 5:30PM EDT![]() While visiting the community area today I was drawn to the RAINN booth. What I saw was a display titled 'Education' showing paperdoll cutouts. Instead of cute childhood sentiments the cutouts were accompanied by chilling statistics about violence against children and women. I asked one of the volunteers about the display. ![]() She explained "We try to make our display more accessible to people. One of the things about rape is oftentimes people don't want to talk about it, they don't want to think about it, they want to avoid the whole subject. When we go to health fairs if we show a display that says RAPE in big letters people will stay away. What we try to do is camouflage it a little bit and by using paper doll cutouts we're making it look like perhaps a children's hospital display . People approach it and by the time they've figured out what it is they're in our snare." 4:00PM EDTwe're happy to be in atlanta, the city where every street has "peach" in its name, where the people are friendly and nice, and where the weather can be counted on to be nice. it's also a big "sarah" town. they love her here. the press conference just ended now rather than at 3:30 cause sarah was half an hour late. yikes! she went shopping (this is one of her favourite shopping destinations) and got stuck in traffic on her return to the venue. the gates opened earlier than usual today (2:30), so there was a lot more traffic earlier than expected. at least she made it! now we'll have to find out what she bought. at 3:35 kelly willis graced the borders stage for a short acoustic set with amy, her fiddle player. there were about 100 people there to enjoy it. today we're lucky to be interviewing both susanna hoffs and emmylou harris. we're also gonna chronicle fiona's very final show on the tour. we were wrong when we thought that the columbia show was her last--we should check our tour books more often. besides saying good-bye to fiona for good, we'll also be saying adios to abra moore (now who will ash watch every night?!) and our own bob gourley. we're not sure how abra feels about leaving, but we know that bob is bummed. he's had a blast being out on our multimedia side show. hopefully he'll team up with us again for the final show in vancouver. 10:00AM EDTGeorgia. There's always something reassuring about the word. Makes you think of home even if you aren't from there (work with me on this) or Yo La Tengo's drummer, the ever talented Ms. Hubley. Well for one day, Lilith Fair can call Georgia home as we take over the (insert corporate sponsor) Lakewood Amphitheatre. Emily and Amy must have forgotten to feed the cats before leaving home as the Indigos are not playing in their hometown (we miss them already!) but on the bright side we get Fiona back for one more show. Speaking of back, Alisha's Attic return for another go on the Acoustic Stage and Alana Davis also joins us. Shame on us, we don't have any info on Alana anywhere on the site. And to think i once wanted to be a private investigator. We're coming, Alana! By the end of the week we'll know everything there is to know except whether you brush up and down or in tiny circles like the dentists say you should. |
