HOUSTON: WE HAVE LIFT OFF
posted Sunday, August 3, 1997
Houston, TX

joanJoan Osborne and members of her band showed solidarity with Planned Parenthood of Texas by wearing Planned Parenthood tshirts onstage tonight. After the second song Joan explained that earlier in the day Planned Parenthood had been denied a booth at the venue. Through the protest of Joan and Sarah, the owner of the venue, who did not know of the decision to deny the pro choice group access, granted Planned Parenthood the first table inside the gates.

Sarah's performance of "Angel" in which she sings beside keyboardist Vince Jones was disrupted tonight by a loud bang caused by a piece of metal dropping on the distant second stage. The venue was absolutely silent at this point and the falling metal caused a tremendous echo. This made Sarah and Vince laugh and they had trouble gaining their composure to end the song. Sarah, bass player Brian Minato and drummer Ash Sood came out for an encore to play "Ice Cream". The trio was joined by Sarah and Ash's very well behaved and beautiful labrador, Rex. The whole stadium was standing at this point and singing along. Us, too.

shared stageVisitors to the Woodlands show will have no trouble catching acts on the Village stage and the Second stage, as they are both sharing the same stage today. It's one of those days where as much as we like spreading out the entertainment, it just doesn't work logistically. The stage is located in the village area and is near an entrance gate.

Today will be the first day for the second stage artists Mary Black and Katell Keineg. We've been listening to Katell's latest release quite a bit and are really looking forward to seeing her live. She has such a great voice and covers so many styles with her music. We'll have to see what she can do with just just a 20 minute set. Kelly Willis is now the vetern of the second stage with two shows under her belt.

England's Alisha's Attic and New Yorker Alana Davis are on the Village stage for two more shows. With the two smaller stage acts sharing the same stage, we expect it to be crowded in that area today.

HOT HUMID

HOT HUMID

oh did we mention that it's hot and humid? you feel like melted gum as soon as you step outside. and the forecast's for 100 degrees with 100% humidity.

good thing it's such a nice venue and not a concrete monolith like jones beach. there're lots of trees to seek shade under, thank goodness.

today we have some new artists to cover: mary black, lisa loeb (she's so cute!), and katell keinig. and we just said good-bye to colleen wolstenholme who was out for the last week vending her "pill" jewellery. she's bummed to leave, but still psyched that she was part of this historical event. she leaves us and our buddy jay showed up (yay! we missed him) to help us out on the "geek" bus. welcome jay!!!
