WHAT'S A SCRANTON? posted Wednesday, August 13, 1997 Scranton, PA 6:30PM EDTguess what we just saw going past the bus?! Two mounted policemen. another lilith first. we're getting treated to a lot of those these days. the weather's cleared up and the sun's poked out. it's actually very beautiful here on this "ski hill" (it's more like a pimple). the crew seems to be in a better mood now. lisa loeb just finished her last lilith show. she said that she was very sad to leave. that's nice to hear, but not surprising. this truly is a great tour to be on; we've heard that over and over from all the artists and their crews. And we are equally sad when people that we grow close to have to leave. We'll especially miss Lisa. it's also patti griffin's last show. she put on her usual great set today for her send off. sheryl and sarah both ran out from back stage to watch her. sheryl commented that she wanted to see everyone play today, and it seems like she's managing to do that. 5:30PM EDTwhat's up with the people at this venue? first they were yelling and screaming while yungchen sang (that's a first. previous audiences have been spellbound and enthralled), then people have been accosting us and grabbing us while we've been trying to videotape performances. security even had to drag someone away from jay while he was photographing patty. there must be some nice people out there--we just haven't met them yet! yungchen was great again, despite the distracted and distracting crowd. the indigo girls, sarah, and jewel all gathered on the stage to watch her set. later sarah grabbed us to take a photo of her with yung chen. soon jewel and sheryl were there too, so we got a photo of all of them together. 5:00PM EDTFormer resident of Tibet and world music musician Yungchen Lhamo had the unfortunate task of opening the mainstage at the Montage Mountain show. Few people had entered the venue or had taken their seats at 4:30pm. Yungchen opened by dedicating her show to His Holiness the Dhalai Lama of Tibet. Yungchen dressed in a splendid robe of burgundy fabric with leopard print fabric cuffs looked regal as she sang. A few young audience members seemed to have discovered beer for the first time as they sure didn't know when to stop drinking. This resulted in much whooping and hollering during Yungchen's set. Yungchen sings in Tibetan which the audience didn't understand and their behaviour proved that they didn't care to listen to her even for the soothing sounds she was making. Yungchen has had a great audience response on her other days. Everyone had been very attentive - until today. Hopefully Yungchen will see her experience today as the exception to the rule that it was. 4:30PM EDTThe show started at 4pm this afternoon with Liz Berlin on the acoustic stage. Liz, a member of the band Rusted Root, played her own material while accompanied by fellow Rusted Root, Patrick. Liz played five very intense songs that moved through themes of survival and healing. Liz and Patrick both played acoustic guitars. About fifty to one hundred people walked up the muddy hill near the Village to hear her sing. A favourite song was "Moon" which Liz dedicated to the Women's Resource Centre, the charity that received over $18,000 today from Lilith Fair. She thanked the audience in front of her for supporting the charity by coming to the show. She also thanked those who use the Centre's services and those who work there. 2:00PM EDTfeel like mud wrestling? if you don't, don't bother coming to the show if you have lawn seats. if you do, come on down! it seems like the rain/storm from yesterday just followed us here or vice versa. only now is it letting up and the sky does seem a bit brighter. the forecast is for clearing in the early evening, but thunderstorms and showers until then. the local news showed all the traffic lined up the hill and lots of cars parked in the lot, so this sold out venue will actually have an audience in attendance. it's too bad they won't have a day like we know they should have. the only new artist today is julia fordham. she's set to play the village stage, but we've not had word on whether that stage will get the go ahead for today. and if it stay's wet and showery, we won't be taking photos/video of anyone--we can't expose our delicate instruments to the moisture. our fingers are crossed that things will improve. |
