OUR HOME AND NATIVE LAND - DAY ONE
posted Friday, August 15, 1997
Toronto, ON

11:30PM EDT

you can tell we're in sarah's home and native land. the audience here was on its feet as soon as the lights dimmed before her arrival onstage. we all made sure we were out there to experience the moment, cause we just knew it would be a love-in. and we weren't wrong. a standing ovation right from the start and at various moments throughout the set ("building a mystery" and "possession" and "ice cream") made all of us grin from ear to ear.

sarah's parents were in the audience to witness their daughter's triumphant return. they were so excited and proud of her! they'll be attending the show tomorrow as well and plan to catch all the village and b-stage acts (provided it's not raining).

7:00PM EDT

Shawn Colvin pulled much of her set today from her latest album "A Few Small Repairs". Shawn was joined on stage with Stuart Smith on guitar and Larry Cowen on bass. Midway through Shawn Colvin's set the sun came out. This was a pleasant surprise for the sold-out crowd at today's show. Shawn pointed out to those on the lawn and said "we're glad for you lawn people. They're a hardy bunch those lawn people." This caused those on the lawn to applaud. Then Shawn said "I'm a chair person myself" at which point those in the chairs cheered. The crowd was attentive and quiet during Shawn's set until the first strains of her hit song "Sunny Come Home" when they cheered and clapped.

5:00PM EDT

Rainfall this afternoon has closed the b stage and thus the b stage performers will be sharing the main stage. First on the stage was Lhasa de Sela and her three piece band. At the beginning of her two song set Lhasa said she would be "playing some songs in spanish for you." Her band included accordion, stand up bass and acoustic guitar. Lhasa seemed hesitant at the beginning of her set but quickly relaxed when she saw that the incoming crowd was attentive to her singing. Lhasa's strong voice and dramatic gestures, like her hand clasping her forehead, could give non-spanish listeners an idea of the melodramatic quality of the music. We'll look forward to a bigger sample of Lhasa's set tomorrow. Hopefully the skies will clear and the sol will shine.

4:30PM EDT

Julia Fordham played to a crowd of about 100 people on the acoustic stage this afternoon. The stage is located on the bank of a small willow tree river. Fordham played four songs while playing the acoustic guitar. Musical partner David Clifton added texture to her songs with his electric guitar playing. Julia chose some of her songs from her album called "eastwest" including the lovely "Stay". Julia commented near the end of her set that her audience looked "very attractive" when wet. "And me my hair is sticking to my mouth which always looks fabulous" she added with a good natured laugh."

3:45PM EDT

it's raining. yep, deja vu. we hope it's not scranton all over again, but it does look kinda sopped in. so that means we won't be photographing or taping either andi duncan or emm gryner and possibly lhasa if it doesn't end in the next hour and a bit.

the forecast for tomorrow is hot and humid; if that's the way it is, we'll catch them then.

1:30PM EDT

not much has happened so far today. the crew set up yesterday along with the cbc, cause this show is being filmed for a documentary special. that made the day today an easy one: no load in and the bulk of the crew arrived at 10:30. it'll be the same tomorrow. it's nice, but weird to have days like this.

a whole lot of familiar faces are here. people from nettwerk records and management, friends, and bands that we know. it's so nice to see their familiar faces. some of the crew live here, so they're happy to hook up with their family and friends too.

there are a few new faces on the bill: wild strawberries (yay, we love them, they're so sweet), lhasa (can't wait to see her), dayna manning, em gryner, and meredith brooks.

unfortunately we just heard the weather forecast and it doesn't sound good. showers starting at 3 and then thunderstorms and winds from 6 on til midnight. yuck! let's hope the weather gods have pity on us, otherwise we'll just be writing about the show.

our buddy adam is here to see the show today and to hang with us. he works very hard behind the scenes on the lilith site, so it's great to see him here to actually participate in and enjoy this awesome experience.
