35 DOWN, TWO TO GO posted Friday, August 22, 1997 Calgary, AB 11:00PM MDTWe didn't catch too much of Sarah's set tonight as we were preparing for an immediate departure after she finished. Normally we will stick around and upload content until 1:00am or so, but tonight we thought we would be better off heading for the hills. But what we did see was spectacular. The Calgary crowd was so into this show. They really were a wonderful audience. When Sarah finished her set with "Possession" she was brought back for more with chants of "Sarah! Sarah! Sarah!" You couldn't help but be moved. As is the custom she began her encore with "Ice Cream" featuring Brian Minato and the purple haired Ash Sood. And, as is another custom, Sarah encouraged the crowd to sing along. This was the loudest Ice Cream singing crowd that we have had so far. They were screaming out words. It really brought a smile to Sarah's face. The night closed with another rousing rendition of Joni Mitchell's "Big Yellow Taxi". Sarah paid special attention to hometown performer Danielle French, sharing the mic with her during the chorus. Verses of the song were performed by Sarah, Shawn Colvin, Emily and Amy, and Lisa Loeb. It may have been the first time that Lisa had sung one of the verses as she was trying to keep up with the words by reading a cheat sheet prepared by the ringleader of the Taxi gang - Emily from the Indigo Girls. Lending their voices to the choruses were many of the other performers throughout the day including the Indigo's bass player, Camille Henderson, Danielle French, as well as other backing musicians from many of the bands. 10:00PM MDTCalgary has beautiful sunsets. With the mountains around the city it is really striking in the evening. Shawn Colvin's set was great. She was dressed in a great rocker outfit and was barraged with a volley of "We Love You Shawn!" from a gaggle of fans. The Indigo Girls just finished their set and, like Lisa, said that this was their first visit to Calgary. They had the crowd singing start to finish, especially at the end when they were joined on stage by Sarah, Shawn, Lisa, and Ash. There was so much energy on the stage and in the crowd. No one looks like they are having as much fun as Amy and Emily. 7:30PM MDTThe crowd is still coming into McMahon Stadium. Unlike a few of the earlier shows, this place is very easy to get into with plenty of parking, great local transit access, and some people even walked here. I guess that's the advantage of playing in a football stadium, it's set up to accomodate 40,000 people. Lisa Loeb's set went over great tonight. She was asked in the press conference about coming to Northern Alberta sometime soon. If she does, it looks like she'll have a lot of fans from Calgary coming up wo see her play. Shawn Colvin joined Lisa on one song. Despite some of the monitor problems that Lisa seemed to be having during that song it came across great and the Calgary fans showed their appreciation. Earlier on the Village stage Oh Susanna made her Lilith debut under a sun that was coming down right on her. Listening to Suzie sing you would never know that she lives in Vancouver. Her voice has a Patsy Cline, southern-tinged quality to it that makes you take notice. Although Suzie made light of the effect that the heat was having on her guitar, she sounded great and made more than a few fans in Calgary. Camille Henderson stuck around for Suzie's set and congratulated her on a job well done. Danielle French played to an overwhelming appreciative hometown crowd. It is always great for us to see artists playing in their hometown. The bond between artist and crowd is especially tight in those circumstances. Even with a broken wrist Danielle put on a great performance that should raise her profile here in Calgary. You would never know Dayna Manning was 19 when you listen to her. Dayna played before a packed crowd over on the second stage this afternoon and put on one of the best received performances of the day. It was definitely one of the biggest crowds that we have seen at the second stage. 5:15PM MDTA large crowd was gathered to watch Tara McLean's set this afternoon. Most of the crowd sat on the tarp-laden grass in the hot sun. Tara was joined onstage by her partner Bill who played acoustic guitar. Many Lilith Fair crew and press members sat at side stage on the very comfy nontarp-laden grass watching the show. Lisa Loeb was seen peering through the 10 foot fence by the stage watching most of the set. Tara played several songs from her Nettwerk album Silence including "Let Her Feel The Rain" and the haunting title track. Tara was genuine and friendly in her commentary. At one point she said she wouldn't play guitar for the Richard Thompson cover she was going to play because "I'm shitty at guitar". This was a mellow start for the B stage at this, the second last Lilith Fair show. 4:45PM MDTThings got off to a great start today. The press conference went pretty well. It looked like everyone was there. More info about that is coming your way. Camille started things off on the acoustic stage. Not only did the 500 or so fans get to see another great set from Camille, but they got an even bigger surprise when Sarah joined Camille on stage. The screams from the Calgary fans were something to behold, as was the song that Camille and Sarah sang together. Cathy was sitting there in the front with her camera, so look for a video clip of Camille and Sarah later. Right now we're off to see Oh Suzanna and then catch some of Tara on the second stage. Things are moving pretty quickly here in Cowtown. 1:45PM MDTWow, it has warmed up considerably in Calgary. The sun is making its prescence known. Nothing like some of the earlier shows, but still, quite a change from first thing this morning. The uncomfortable wooden planks that were on the football field have been removed. Whew! I couldn't imagine having to sit on them all day - not that i would have been, but since we care about you, it troubled us. The blue tarp is still there. I guess they don't want the turf damaged for the football games. Gotta watch out for those Lilith concert goers. Soundchecks are underway. Sarah is going through a few new songs for her set tonight. She has an extra 15 minutes tonight. We can't wait to see what she puts back into the set. Looks like "Aida" is back in. On the Village Stage, Suzie from Oh Susanna just got in and has been whisked away to do her check. She was making up some song about possibly injuring me in a baseball game. I know that there were a few throws that i had made from my shortstop position to her at first base that were in the dirt and may have caused her to suffer a bruised shin or two (or ten) but i didn't think she still held a grudge. I guess i'll be watching my back (and shins) today. The crew is still buzzing about the end of the tour. You can see it in everyone's eyes (when they take their sunglasses off). The thought of sleeping in their own bed as opposed to the bus is very appealing. Plus the chance to see loved ones, family (hopefully the same as loved ones), and lead a boring life for a week or two is something everyone is looking forward to. 11:30AM MDTYes, it is our first football stadium. So far we've had a horse track, two mountain sides, a tennis court, and a gorge. We have a football stadium tomorrow too, but that's getting ahead of ourselves. Everyone is in great spirits today, though slightly disoriented. That's what happens after a 30 hour bus ride from Minneapolis to Calgary. We finally got the schedule for today, so we know who is playing when and where. We're lucky enough to have Lisa Loeb back with us. Everyone has a special spot in their heart for Lisa. Tara MacLean is back, too. She keeps popping up every now and then. Tara is so sweet. The Village Stage has a couple of new guests today, too. Camille is starting things off at 3:40. Then Oh Suzanna and Danielle French take the stage. Oh Suzanna is our friend Suzie from Vancouver. Not only does she have a great sound, she's also plays a mean first base. Danielle is from Calgary, so this is a big hometown show for her. She broke her arm not that long ago, so she'll need someone to play guitar for her during her set. The weather seems like it will cooperate today. It's kinda cool and overcast, but it doesn't look like it will rain. If you are coming tonight you might want to make sure you bring a sweater or something. And the astroturf of the football field is covered with these gawd-awful pieces of plywood and a big blue tarp. it doesn't look that comfortable to sit on. still, with the layout of the stages and the village, it should be a great day. |
