LILITH GOES TO WASHINGTON (or close enough)
posted Tuesday, July 29, 1997
Columbia, MD

9:00PM EDT

Jewel was welcomed warmly by the Maryland crowd tonight. About half the house stood and clapped as she walked onstage. Looking cool and elegant in a blue sundress and high heels the Alaskan singer began her set with two acoustic numbers.

The rest of her set mixed solo acoustic guitar numbers and those with her whole band which includes a keyboard player and cello player besides the usual bass, guitar and drums. Each of Jewel's songs were received with cheers and yells of 'we love you!' (and that was just the crew). Jewel's voice was clear and strong and her presence onstage was confident and assured. When Jewel and her band broke into the hit 'Save Our Souls' the house was all hers. Fans throughout the room began to sing along and part of the house stood and danced through that song. When Jewel left the stage the entire venue stood and cheered until she returned for an acoustic encore.

The Lilith Village is bustling this afternoon with the regular vendors and also the stands for several community groups. Besides the tables for LIFEbeat and RAINN there was Planned Parenthood of Maryland and Rachael Woman's Centre. Rachael Woman's Centre received the donation from ticket sales today. Planned Parenthood were giving away condoms and also were giving away prizes for those who had luck at their dildo tossing game.(Tossing a plastic ring around the dildo sitting on the table wins a prize.)

Several happy Sarah fans were walking around with their new Sarah singles and other hard to find items. Rarities and B-Sides which is unavailable in the U.S. aside from mailorder seemed to be very popular.

The blue seats were nearly full for Fiona Apple's performance today. After the first song Fiona asked the crowd to shout a birthday cheer for her one year old nephew which she recorded on a handheld mini recorder. Once again Fiona's all male band looked cool and fashionable in their summer dresses.

4:00PM EDT

jewel's arrived back to play with us for another week or so. it's nice to see her sunny face around here again. one of her crew, colm, has brought his dog jack out with him this time. so now we have another four-legged friend to make.

this venue is in a supreme location. there are woods all around it, so the smell is amazing. it's a bit smaller than some of the others we've played (not smaller than salem), but it's really cozy. and it's got kind of a 70s summer camp feel about it.

we sure felt like we were at summer camp when we hit catering both early this morning and for lunch. slim pickings! you wouldn't think this was a sold out show. so far this is rating up there in badness with salem (except for the mixed green salad here). we'll see how dinner fares, but truthfully we're set to break into the store of granola bars we have in our cupboards. either that or we'll join some of the other crew who've headed to the food fair at the mall nearby.

once blue hooks up with us again today. this time we're gonna get some footage of their quiet set. last time we shot them all we could hear on the audio were people chatting about their friends. and we'll do the same for newcomer abra moore, who unfortunately is only joining us for the next 4 shows.

the TBA on the borders stage is toni blackman. we sheepishly admit to knowing nothing about her. we'll know more in hour though.

1:00PM EDT

As the lineup turns: Jewel is back until August 20th. Tracy Chapman has finished her second and last series of Lilith dates. On the second stage Once Blue return for one show, and Abra Moore is here until August 1st. Which means taht Victoria Williams has left the building as has Susanna Hoffs, who will be back tomorrow. Whew!
