![]() Sunday, August 9, 1998 Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Yesterday, I flew into Cincinnati to join Lilith Fair for another five dates. I'll be leaving again after the second Massachusetts date this week, but will then be coming back for the last 10 days. I had somewhat mixed feelings about coming back. It's definitely good to be out of the NY office and around good music, but at the same time the daily routine of traveling can really get to you after a while. But fortunately, I won't be out here for an extended period of time. My apartment is currently being taken care of by Suzannah and Stephanie from Litany. When I arrived yesterday it was absolutely pouring at the airport. I thought it would be one of those days where we couldn't shoot anything on the B and village stages. But over the course of the 1/2 hour cab ride, the weather seemed to be getting nicer and nicer. When I arrived, it was bright and sunny. I arrived at the bus and fortunately Jill was there, as I didn't have a key yet and really didn't want to be wandering around the venue with my suitcase. Things are a bit different now on our bus. We have more people, we have a new couch replacing the table, and I now have a middle bunk instead of the bottom one. Now I just have to remember that when I wake up in the morning (but at least I don't have the top one). Because I arrived in the middle of a working day, I didn't have a whole lot to do. I managed to watch Luscious Jackson's entire set, which was amazing. I was impressed by the range of material that they did; they did some really early stuff in addition to material from the most recent album. But I do miss Vivian, the former keyboardist who left the band earlier this year. Today we are in Burgettstown, PA. I didn't really remember the venue from last year until I went to the backstage area, which is on kind of a wooden platform. It's funny how certain things stick out in your mind about a place. It was a decent venue to work at--it's pretty quick to get around from one stage to the next. We interviewed Jill from Luscious Jackson this afternoon. I had interviewed her over the phone in December so it was good to finally speak to her in person. Yvonne, Nina and I all conducted the interview, which was good because we all asked different types of questions. Luscious Jackson, by the way, are one of my favorite bands. I just took photos of Natalie Merchant, who is probably the most difficult performer to shoot. I think I've mentioned this in previous tour diaries, but she just dances around so much that most of the photos turn out as big blurs. I did get a few good shots tonight, however, including some with N'Dea Davenport on stage with her. |
