Charlotte, North Carolina
We're here in Charlotte, North Carolina, the largest city in the Carolinas
as well as the third largest banking city in the U.S. Charlotte is also
known as one of the first gold mining towns--well before the California
gold rush. It's super humid today but with some cloud cover and with any
luck, we'll get a few showers later in the day. The kind bus driver has
left the engine running on the bus, so we'll have some air conditioning
(thankfully).
10:00am
Ahhh, I slept like a baby. It's only taken a week and I'm now fully
adapted to the bus/bunk sleeping arrangement. I think learning how to
sleep on the subway before I got here has helped. The air conditioning is
back on, at least for now, and I'm in bus heaven. Oh yeah, we got another
new person on the bus, so I'm not such a rookie anymore. But all the bunks
except for one are full, which is a lot of people for this bus.
3:15pm
The press conference is going well--the folks are asking some good
questions. And I mean this in the nicest way possible, but that hasn't
been the case in every city. But the cool thing is that no matter what
anyone asks, their questions are answered by Sarah and the other artists in
the most respectful and patient way possible. Today's donation to the
local Shelter for Battered Women was $13,000.
4:00pm
I made a grave mistake. I left some items back at the last venue--what a
pain in the butt!!! Just as things were going so smoothly. I've been
calling them all day and repeating who I am and where they can send it and
what it looks like. Arghhh.
But the good news is that the food here in the South is suburb. There's a
guy outside of catering who's been snapping the tops off of the Sugar Snap
Peas since breakfast. I take a lot of comfort in knowing such care is
going into our meals and that when I come back in a half hour, he'll still
be there.
8:00pm
I finally secured a phone line long enough to send some emails. It's weird
to be in the communications business and be out of touch with the rest of
world outside of Lilith.
Right now we're keeping it real by hanging around at the top of the grass
knoll that overlooks the audience and the stage. We were looking for some
fans to interview, but as we started to ask some questions a fight broke
out between two people. When something like that happens, it always seems
so unreal to me--like I can't believe someone is actually *hitting*
somebody else. Anyway, the fight broke up albeit with some unpleasantries
exchanged between the two parties and about that time the authorities
arrived. Geesh.
10:45
I'm backstage watching Sarah's performance. It's cooling off tonight which
is a relief. I've just caught the tail end of, "Ice Cream" and the
audience is singing, "Your love is better than chocolate, is better than
anything else that I've tried." Sarah has on one of my favorite outfits--a
pink and orange halter top that ties around the neck and back with these
awesome pink and orange pants and Berkenstocks. Her drummer, Ash, if I
haven't mentioned before, has got awesome dyed bluish purple hair that goes
well with the overall color pallet of Lilith's purples, blues and gold's.
Now for those of you critics out there who think I'm describing her
wardrobe because she's a woman and all that, well, pashaw, I'm a girl and I
like clothes.
Midnight
I've discovered that I prefer to shower in the empty dressing rooms
than in the bathrooms. We secured an empty room and I was able to lock the
bathroom door--what a treat! See how precious privacy is around here?!
