![]() Tuesday, August 4, 1998 St. Louis, Missouri This was a strange and interesting day. It started out rainy and quite temperate. Then it was suddenly sunny and steaming hot. It rained briefly again sometime in the afternoon and the night finished off with an excellent thunderstorm, the likes of which I don't see in San Francisco. The crowd seemed mellow, yet attentive, sitting on the lawn listening to B stage artists, or standing quietly and taking in the Village stage acts. The only whoops and hollers I heard were for Drugstore, who were amazing! They come in late because they were trying to smuggle a bottle of wine in--which the venue people did not like. Isabel was wearing a slinky white slip with a silk night jacket over it and knee-hi black rubber boots, WOW! Her lips were stained bright pinkish-red, widening her huge smile and smearing a little with every cigarette and sip out of her dubious cup of something. Their music is part country-rockabilly-cabaret-roadhouse-loungy. Her French-tinged accent only adds to the enchantment. They only played four songs and left the crowd aching for more of what she was letting out of her soul. You just couldn't help staring and dancing and smiling and laughing. |
