![]() Sunday, June 21, 1998 George, Washington Day 3 of 84: a sunny day at the Gorge, with threats of a thunderstorm. The Gorge is beautiful. My eyes dash from the beautiful Natalie Merchant, swaying her hips sensually as she sings, to the dark silhouette of the glacier--cut mountains and above it, my very own sky--touch of pink at the bottom, and the rest a neverending glowing blue streaked with the clouds of dusk. Kristina says there is an old proverb from Kenya, "You don't inherit the earth from your parents, you borrow it from your children." It is Father's Day, and I have already cried. Then Sinead O'Connor comes on stage, and I cry again. You would too if you heard her. All of her speaks through her voice, and she is unafraid to feel love and pain as she sings. "This song is about sexual abuse," she announces. It is about loss, what was taken away. Her strength is even more apparent as she constantly reveals her fragility. The crew and Natalie Merchant and Sarah's band members talk about the performance. I am not the only one she moved to tears. |
