Milwaukee, Wisconsin
1O:45 am
Bus call. . . we all had a day off yesterday and everyone's talking about what they did to entertain themselves in Milwaukee. Seems like Jill, Jennifer, Aliza and I did pretty well by finding a great Mexican restaurant to eat at last night. We also indulged Jill and went to see There's Something About Mary with her, which sad to say, we were all a little disappointed in (we didn't laugh as much as we were expecting). We have two shows at this venue, so we get to keep our hotel rooms for tonight --a luxury since we get to leave all our stuff in our rooms til tomorrow . It makes you feel a little more grounded.
11:30 am
This looks like a good venue. . . nicely spread out, and our bus is parked close to the B stage. On the bus, Jennifer wants everyone to pick a photo from a magazine showing the "grossest" scenes from movies, that will be pasted over our pictures on our passes. Jill gets Linda Blair from Exorcist and I get a cut-out of Jeff Daniels with his tongue frozen to a pole from Dumb & Dumber. No one else is going to get this, but we all have a good laugh over the silliness of it all.
2:00 pm
I go to the House of La La to get my hair done. Jennifer takes pictures of the process. I can't see what's being done to my hair and really have no say in the matter until it's done. I figure whatever she does will be cool and at the least, something I can handle for the day. I finally see the end product, and my hair is piled into three knots on top, and twisted all through the back. There must be 50 bobby pins in there holding it all together. I like it, but my hair feels ten feet tall, and I'm not so sure about the three butterfly clips that Tara puts on as a final touch. I walk around, trying to get used to it, showing my 'do' to people who give it a thumbs up. I guess I can try it out for a day.
5:00 pm
The audience seems very mellow today. I don't know if it's the vastness of the venue, or if it's just the Milwaukee way, but the crowd seems rather mellow and unexcitable. They sit on the ground for the B and Village stage performances, and finally get excited when Sarah comes onstage to sing with N'Dea Davenport. N'Dea even comments about how that got them off their feet.
6:00 pm
I've already had five women ask me about my hair, including two of the B and village stage artists. I direct them to the House of La La as my job for the day requires me to do. The only thing I'm not enjoying about my hairdo is feeling that it's attracting attention while I shoot the performances. We usually try to be as inconspicuous as possible so as not to get in the way of the artist or the audience, but this isn't helping!
6:30 pm
Today is Liz Phair's last day, and she seems like she had a blast on her Lilith stint. Sarah and N'Dea sing on Liz's last song of her set. A cake is brought out complete with sparklers, and by the end of the song, a cake fight breaks out which Sarah initiates by smearing a handful of icing on Liz's stomach. I'm happy to be witnessing this, capturing it all on video.
7:00 pm
Dinner had an East Indian theme to it tonight. The food is good, but the desserts look a little strange --various mushy puddings of different colours and flavours --but I'm impressed that one of them is vegan. Jen and Aliza get one of each for a taste test. The vegan semolina and raisin square wins and the runny carrot pudding comes in last.
8:00 pm
We hear about a couple of crew parties happening tonight --a crew member's leaving the tour, and two others are having birthdays. Hmmm, I wonder if I can muster the energy to go out tonight, I feel like I'm getting Jen's cold.
11:00 pm
Our bus left at 10 pm to go back to the hotel (most of my bus mates end work at 8:30 pm) so Jennifer, Aliza, and I have stayed to catch the big finale. We take the crew bus back to the hotel, and we're amazed at how crazy their bus is compared to ours...dj turntables and disco balls make the front lounge seem so. . . festive. There's music and cake for Jen B. who's birthday will be celebrated tonight at a bar. I wish I could go out tonight but I opt for sleep instead --I donšt want this cold bug to get me.
