The commitment of Washington Women's Shetler, Inc. is to strive for the personal growth and development of all women. Services are based on a concept of supportiveness, rejecting the idea that victims of domestic violence are "sick" or "different". We recognize the vulnerability of all women including ourselves, to acts of sexual assault and domestic abuse. We see the root cause of violence against women as lying in the institutionalized subservience of women, and seek to support and involve in our program battered women and victims of assault.
Washington Women's Shelter, Inc. was established to provide supportive services on issues pertinent to women of all backgrounds to promote self-dependency and meet expressed needs. We seek to help women assume control over their lives and to constantly define violence as an unacceptable means of control under any circumstances.
Services
Washington Women's Shelter, Inc. provides services to area victims of domestic violence and their children. Services offered include: safe shelter for up to 30 days in any six month period; 24-hour hotline; 24-hour transportation and intake; one-to-one supportive, educative options counseling; information and referrals; legal advocacy program; food, clothing and personal care items; accompaniment; advocacy; in-house children's program; and community support groups. Training and community education programs are also offered throughout the community. All services are offered free to victims of domestic violence, their children and their "significant others". Services are offered confidentially and without regard to race, color, age, sex, religious creed, ancestry, national origin, handicap or disability, marital status or sexual orientation.
