Through their commitment to the non-profit aspect of the tour, organizers of Lilith Fair have raised almost two million dollars for national and regional non-profit organizations since 1997; in 1999, tour organizers will build on that success. Sponsors will again participate in the non-profit effort, each company committing in advance to a major tie-in with at least one national non-profit organization. $1.00 from each ticket sold will again be donated to a local charity (in most cases the local charity will be a domestic violence shelter). In addition, Lilith Fair organizers have developed Mosaic, a project committed to raising money for regional non-profit arts organizations.
The following is a partial list of national non-profit organizations who will be recipients of Lilith Fair's contributions and will also have booths in the Village area on each Lilith Fair date:
The Breast Cancer Fund
The Breast Cancer Fund is devoted to creating a widespread public response to the breast cancer epidemic. The fund is working nationally and internationally to find better ways to detect, treat and ultimately prevent breast cancer - and to make sure that the best possible medical and psychological care is made available to women living with the disease. Representatives of The Fund will be at each of the Lilith Fair concerts to distribute breast exam cards and other educational material. In addition, The Breast Cancer Fund will again be selling "Girl Tags" necklaces to raise money for the fund.
Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network
The Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN) operates America's only national hotline for survivors of sexual assault. The hotline - 800.656.HOPE - offers free, confidential counseling and support 24 hours a day, from anywhere in the country. In under five years of operation, the RAINN network of 826 local rape crisis centers has already helped more than 240,000 victims of sexual assault. RAINN representatives will be at each of the Lilith Fair shows to distribute their educational material.
LIFEbeat
LIFEbeat, a not-for-profit HIV/AIDS resource and awareness organization, is the American music industry's response to the international HIV/AIDS crisis. Their presence on both the 1997 and 1998 Lilith Fair tours enabled LIFEbeat to perform an unprecedented level of HIV/AIDS outreach: Through partnerships with local AIDS service organizations, LIFEbeat was able to distribute condoms, brochures, hotline cards and educational information at every Lilith Fair show. LIFEbeat will again be on tour with Lilith Fair in 1999, reaching more people with even more condoms, brochures, hotline cards and educational information.
Global Exchange
Global Exchange is a human rights organization that exposes economic and political injustices around the world-- and then organizes for change. As part of its broader human rights mission, Global Exchange sponsors a Fair Trade program that helps support women-owned cooperatives in developing countries through the sale of hand-crafted housewares, jewelry and clothing. On the 1999 Lilith Fair tour, Global Exchange will sell handcrafts made by artisans who were paid a fair wage for their skills, work in healthy conditions and use their profits for community development. Through Fair Trade sales, Global Exchange generates income for artisans in over 30 countries while educating first-world consumers about the conditions where goods are made, helping to build economic justice from the bottom up.
Planned Parenthood
The oldest and largest voluntary reproductive health care organization, Planned Parenthood is dedicated to the principle that every individual has the fundamental right to choose when or whether to have children, and believes in equal access to health care. Planned Parenthood further believes that such self-determination will contribute to an enhancement of the quality of life, strong family relationships and population stability.
