![]() Her debut solo album "is about empowerment, about growth, about moving from darkness to light," says Kina Cosper. Until now, Kina (pronounced kee-na) was best-known for being a member of the vocal trio Brownstone. The Detroit-born and raised singer-lyricist grew up listening to everything from Elton John to Chaka Khan to Led Zeppelin. Her to-date-untitled album, set for a late summer release on DreamWorks Records, also ranges from rock and pop to soul and R&B. "Everyone can relate to what I write and sing about," Kina says of her album, which includes the track "Girl From The Gutter." "I sing from my gut and from my soul, I sing hard and I sing soft. But it's also a woman's album in a way because it's so emotional. For anyone having a bad day, 'Girl From The Gutter' is about being the underdog. It's an I'll-show-you song. I think the whole album's very dramatic."
