July 9, The Gorge Day 1 Waking up to the Gorge is quite a nice experience. This is an unbelievably beautiful place, and it's hard to believe that a music venue sits here. Imagine a venue at the edge of the grand canyon and that's what it's like. i've never been to the grand canyon, but this is what i picture it as, maybe a bit more brown and rocky. it's very hot here today...things are quite roasty even by 9 am.Our bus and office space are parked quite far from the main stage, so we'll be walking alot over the next two days. And climbing hills. It takes almost 10 minutes to get from the mainstage or the catering tent to our bus. I'm not complaining - heck, i need the exercise - but it makes the idea of returning to the bus after shooting the mainstage very unappealing. You sort of have to plan any trip back and forth, allow yourself enough time to get from one spot to another, or if all else fails, plead someone with a golfcart to drive you up the hill. Today ends up being very hectic, with Jennifer and I still getting used to the pace and figuring out what we need to do during our long work days. It will probably take a few more days to really get into the swing of things. Not only do we have to get used to the work, but also life on the road. By the end of the day, I'm feeling kind of frustrated at the fact that I'm in this amazing environment that is the Gorge, without really being able to enjoy it. There's just no time to sit down and relax and enjoy the view. I just hope I can catch the sunset. By the end of the evening, Jocelyn mentions that she almost stepped on a rattle snake near her office, so we're all on the lookout for them while making our way around the darkened backstage area. Before the night ends, my friend Josh (Beth Orton's tour manager) finds a tiara to stick atop his shaven head and dedicates himself to waving goodbye to the streaming crowd as they leave the venue. He stands there for over an hour, waving like the Queen to a few thousand happy Lilith concertgoers. Although his arm aches like all heck, he's killing himself laughing, saying it's the best time he's ever had on tour. Instead of sleeping at a hotel, we're spending the night here at the Gorge, by popular demand after last year's camp out here. A few small groups form outside of the buses, as some of the crew gather to chat and have a beer before turning in for the night. Tomorrow will be busier - we're expecting double the crowd we saw here today (tomorrow's Saturday), and even hotter temperatures. |
