Vanessa's Diary

July 11, Portland, OR

Today's stadium set up was quite strange. All three stages were set up on the field of the Portland Civic Stadium, which made for some strange acoustics, and less-than-stellar sighlines. It was tough getting around the venue today once it filled with people, and the sun beating down on the proceedings didn't make for the most pleasant afternoon.

I stayed in the office for most of the afternoon, trying to catch up on some work, but made it out later to shoot the mainstage artists. Liz Phair did somethiing I hadn't seen her do before...instead of singing at the mic with her guitar strapped on, she was guitar and mic stand free, walking around the stage freely,  swaying to the music and looking almost liberated to be able to move around as she pleased. Perhaps the Lilith spirit has inspired her to try new things.

It's especially challenging here to get into the area in front of the mainstage where we can shoot from. At one point, upon arrival at the edge of the mainstage barrier, I run into Ray - our busmate and tour security director - who notices my frustration with the lack of entrance points to the pit, and offers to lift me over the barrier. Ok, why not - and he lifts me over the waist high gate in one swift move, as if I weigh nothing. What service!

During a free moment in the evening, Jennifer and I venture up the street from the venue to get some good strong Portland-esque coffee, as the brown stuff in catering is lacking in every way possible. We find a particularly funky and picturesque street to walk down, which is brimming with all kinds of people hanging out at sidewallk cafés. This street is so cute and so appealing, it gives me a new appreciation for this city, and even causes Jennifer to announce she wants to move here. Portland, who knew?
