ASO Partner - Northwest Aids Foundation

Today was a very slow day. The location we were in wasn't the best and the village overall wasn't seeing much action. We went into the crowd a lot to hand out information.

Visitors to our booth today were greeted with big smiles and excellent counseling from AIDS Arms - our partner for the day. It is unfortunate that not many people took advantage of their expertise.

All was not lost though. At the very end of the day a group of young black girls who had been working at the venue stopped by the booth. I asked their ages - they were 15 & 16. They both took information on teens and HIV - shyly looked at the condoms and giggled and left. A few minutes later one of them came back and said she wanted to ask me something. She leaned in and softly asked if I were a mother what would I think of seeing my teenager with HIV information - "'cause I don't want her to think I am having sex 'cause I'm not." I told her that I would probably be glad that she was learning to protect herself and would answer any questions that she had. I told her that I hoped that her mother would feel the same. I gave her another pamphlet on women and sexually transmitted diseases and told her that when she was ready to make sure that she was safe.

I can't tell how I felt when she left. She is who we are trying to reach with Zero Transmission 2001. Maybe she will pass on that information to new friends and they will pass the information on to more friends and more friends and more....
