Jennifer's Diary

July 27 Diary
Charlotte, NC

What a blah day.  The groove just wasn't there early on but things picked up a little bit later.  The repetition of the whole thing is starting to hit home a little.  Everyone is really into their groove now, most of the kinks are worked out and you pretty much know how things are going to unfold from day to day.   It can be a good thing because it means things will go smoother as a whole.

The one unexepected or unusual occurrence of the day was our interview with Battleshell.  What a crazy group of people (in a good way, of course). They were completely excited to be interviewed by us and had a lot to say about music and playing on the Lilith Fair.  The guy in the band was very coherent and articulate about his thoughts, and it was nice to hear opinions from a male perspective for a change.  Almost always we talk only to the front woman of the band or the artist whose name is on the bill as many of the artists are performers who are backed by bands as opposed to being a part of a band.

The extent to which I ended up liking Mediaeval Beabes was also a complete surprise to me.  They were definately the diversity the media has been crying (whining?) for on the Lilith Fair lineup!  Eleven women make up the vocals, plus two drummers and another older woman who plays an intsrument whose name is escaping me right now.  I don't exactly know the verbage to describe their music other than medieval and like the soundtrack to "Excaliber".  I know that's lame but I'm just not well versed in what I'm going to call "ancient folkloric music".   That's pretty out there but hey, I don't know what else to say.  Just absolutely phenomenal.  A really nice change from the usual mainstream music that happens here.  The other amazing thing was that they were received so well by the audience.  Five years ago I don't think that would have been the case.  I'm not sure what has happened to make that so but I'm glad about it.
