Lifebeat Daily Diary
Tuesday July 27 - Blockbuster Pavillion, Charlotte, NC
ACO - Metrolina AIDS Project
Thankfully a steady cloud cover helped to keep the heat bearable. The
activity in the southern states seems to be just a little slower. I don't
know if its
because the south is a little more conservative.
We had a number of mothers come by the table today picking up condoms and
information for their daughters and sons. One mother was with her teenage
daughter and was gathering materials and condoms and telling her daughter that
they were going to go over the information at home. The daughters's face turned
five shades of red. The mother told her "Look I don't know when you are
going to
start but I know that I am going to make sure you know how to protect
yourself."
I spoke to them about the rising rate of infection among adolescents and how
great it was that her mother was actually talking to her about everything.
One of
the problems with this high rate is that so many young women are not
getting the
information that they need.
That is one of the reasons that being a part of Lilith Fair has been so
invaluable to us. We have been able to reach hundreds of thousands of young
women and men during these years that we travelled with the tour. Maybe
just maybe reading our information changed a behavior and ultimately saved
a life.
