August 6 Diary
Jones Beach
"A funk of a day"
Jones Beach venue lies right on the water and next to the beach where you
can see people from outside little windows in the bathroom relaxing on the
beach. The huge cement structure reminds me of a prison and smells very
musty and often like sewage. Yum.
Jones Beach is Union Local 1. Which means the union won't let us take
any pictures or do any shooting period, without paying them lots of money
for a video escort. So we sort of had the day off. I was running around
trying to takes notes about what was going on but it's hard to write
everything down. Plus, it had been a late night in the city and I got
practically no sleep. I really don't do well on no sleep so I was cranky
and tired all day.
Lots of people hanging around from the city, it's like LA that way.
Catering is right behind the mainstage so you can't get away from the music
ever and that's where everyone hangs out as well so you can't get away from
the crowds either!
On a more positive note there was a nice breeze flowing through all day to
take some of the heat off. It was sort of nice to have the day off from
shooting and to just sort of enjoy the music without worrying about getting
good shots.
At one point I was watching the Pretenders and I felt this tap on my
shoulder. I turned around, and this woman of about fortyish asked me if
that was Pat Benetar. I stared at her for a second then said, "on the
stage?" She nodded. Once again I stared at her, speechless. How could
this woman not know who that was on the stage? I was astounded. I was
first introduced to the Pretenders when I was sixteen (now 28) and to me
they are legendary.
