Behind the Scenes in San Fransisco, CA 10:30am the village crew is in full set-up mode. The perfect opportunity to take some pictures. The Shoreline Amphitheatre is a great venue - clean, well laid out and with a very nice patio for the crew dining area, not to mention a self-serve frozen yogurt machine that the crew will no doubt wear out. This feels like the first "real" venue we've been to yet (no traipsing across grassy fields and dirt roads, or climbing ridiculous hills as we experienced at the Gorge). 12:45pm Sarah starts her sound check on the main stage. It serves as the music to dine to as it' s also time for lunch. The tables are on the deck right behind the stage and so it's quite loud 2:55pm It's the 2:55 scramble to ensure that every thing is ready for doors to open. One vendor seems to still have an awful lot of unpacking to do. We're spoiled today, as one stage will serve as both the village and B stages, which means not having to snake through the crowds to get from one stage to another to shoot footage. 3:30 Deborah Pardes takes to the Village stage and seems to have quite a few local fans here at the show today. She finishes her set with a song that was written in direct response to Jerry Falwell 's damnation of all things Lilith. Her song becomes an instant hit with the village crowd. 3:55 It's the first day for Tekla, a newly-signed Nettwerk artist. She tells the crowd that this is the first time she has played her songs outside of her native Sweden. She sounds wonderful, and her graceful presence and Kate Bush inspired songs grab the crowd's attention instantly. 4:30 This is Bijou Phillips last day today. Sporting a colourful lei, she manages to get the comfortably sitting B-stage crowd to their feet for one of her more rockin' number. This seems to make her very happy and brings the real performer out in her. She has had a good time on Lilith, and was a constant fixture backstage, taking in the various artists' sets at every opportunity. 5:10 Sixpence None the Richer take to the village/Backstage when they play their hit single "Kiss Me", the audience goes nuts, as they have during every one of their performances. Lead singer Leigh smiles shyly while boisturous cheers eminate from the crowd every time she reaches the chorus. 6:30 Beth Orton finishes on B-stage and a number of fans have gathered around to express their admiration. Screams of "I love you" and pleading s for autographs can be heard. Beth obliges sweetly and is gracious to her doting fans. 6:45 Time for Luscious Jackson to open the mainstage, and towards the end of their set, they surprise the audience when Sheryl Crow comes out to play accordion on a song. Luscious and Sheryl are so far removed from each other musically, which makes seeing them play onstage together all the more fascinating. 7:30 Sandra Bernhard performs a startlingly realistic version of "Dream On" by Aerosmith, after a long diatribe on Courtney Love. Wow, can she ever belt out the high notes. 7:40 The thunderous roar of the crowd cues me that the Pretenders have just gone onstage. The volume of the crowd's screams is deafening. I don't think I've heard crowd noise that loud for any other performer on the tour as yet. As I pass by the side of the stage it looks like everyone is trying to catch their set. Luscious Jackson, Sandra Bernhard, Beth Orton, Bijou Phillips, the Murmurs, and Sheryl Crow are all backstage grooving to the Pretenders, who are playing all of their old hits. Sean Penn and Robin Wright Penn are also seen amoungst the musicians backstage, trying to watch the show while also trying to remain. 9:30 Sheryl is rockin' in her brown leather pants, matching boots and white tank top. She pulls out an accordian to play a cover of "Squeeze Box", at which point she is joined onstage by Bijou Phillips, Beth Orton, and Luscious Jackson. They're all dancing and singing their hearts out. This really gets the crowd excited and creates a charged atmosphere, a near imporssible feat, after the Pretenders' electrifying performance. 11:00 After her performance in front of an adoring audience, Sarah invites all the artists that have played that day to come up and have a singalong with her. The finale, "Put A Little Love in Your Heart" , is once again a huge hit with the crowd as they wonder at seeing so many of their favourite artists standing side by side. Only at the Lilith Fair. |
