Jennifer's Diary

Behind the Scenes in San Francisco, CA July 14 timeline

12:45, Outside of catering the Pretenders can be heard doing a sound check for their acoustic radio performance which will happen later this afternoon. Many of the crew plan to attend. It should be a treat.

3:25 Mya makes a special appearance at the LifeBeat booth to sign autographs. Her fans are lined up, waiting patiently. Today marks Cibo Matto's first date with the Lilith Fair, and everyone is very excited and especially curious to see them. They seem to have quite a few friends here amongst the artists - the band sits at a picnic table by the Village/B-stage with Beth Orton and members of Luscious Jackson.

3:45 Shelley Doty X-Tet, one of two local talent search winners from San Francisco, finishes her set with the song that won her the spot in today's line-up, "Passion Play". Her energetic performance attracts a rather large crowd, and it's easy to see how she won the top talent search spot.

< 4:30 Cibo Matto takes to the stage, and everyone has come by to see them: members of Sarah Mclachlan's band, Luscious Jackson, Beth Orton and a number of crew members are among those in attendance at the side of the stage for Cibo Matto's first set on the Lilith Tour. Upon leaving the stage they are approached by fans seeking autographs and wishing to complement them on their performance.

4:45 Backstage on the basketball court, The Pretenders play an acoustic set for a local radio station and a number of contest winners. About fifty people sit quietly basking in the moment of opportunity to sit a few feet away from what feels like a private performance by a rock legend - Chrissie Hynde. She offers to take requests from those gathered, at which "Kid" is promptly thrown out to her.

5:45 Once again Luscious Jackson bring out Sarah McLachlan to perform with them on "Lady Fingers". Sarah is always phenomenal for hitting those high notes which are duly appreciated by the audience. It's obvious that Sarah is enjoying collaborating with Luscious, and it's exciting to see her perform a genre of music so very different from her own.

5:50 Bonnie Raitt makes a guest appearance on Lucious Jackson's set! The crowd goes nuts of course, and are just as surprised to see her as we are. This is yet another opportunity to see a very interesting juxtaposition of musicians playing side by side, whose work varies so much from one another, and whom you'd never imagine playing together. This is how future artist collaborations beginŠ

5:55 Members of Cibo Matto make it down to the front row at mainstage for the last couple of songs of Luscious Jackson's set. It's always fun to see artists supporting each other, though never a surprise on this tour -Yuka Honda and Sean Lennon are swaying to their music, and seem as captivated by Luscious' show as the rest of the audience.

8:15 We do a quick interview with Shelley Doty outside, behind her dressing room. She's very excited about singing with Sarah on the finale for "Put a Little Love in Your Heart" as she wasn't expecting the opportunity. She's having a great time and can't emphasize enough how "warm" the feeling is here and what a wonderful experience she's had today.

7:40pm The Pretenders get onstage for their second Lilith appearance, and as was the case last night, the crowd goes wild for them. The Pretenders bring an old school flavour and rock and roll energy to the show as they play all their old hits, mixed in with a couple of great new songs. The audience can be heard over the din of the music, singing every word.

10:45pm It's time for the big finale, when all the artists join Sarah onstage for one last song of the night. However, tonight things will take a different turn. Instead of joining in a rendition of Al Green's "Put a Little Love in Your Heart, which the band has begun to play, Chrissie Hynde stops the music and announces that they will be singing a tribute to Sarah tonight, "Superstar"- an old song made famous by the Carpenters. Sarah appears flabbergasted by this news (all the artists chose and rehearsed the song during her set). She goes along with it, joining in on the chorus, while maintaining a very surprised yet overjoyed expression on her face. It's a sweet moment, and we luckily capture it with our cameras.
