Behind the Scenes in Dallas, TX

JULY 21  DALLAS, Timeline

3pm At the press conference today, which is taking place in an unusual place - an onsite bar -there is a surprisingly large press presence, and the conference is quite interesting. Dido comments on how playing the Lilith Fair will likely impact her career, mentioning that this is the very first time she has played for a paying audience in the North America, and she has been getting a very warm reception from the Lilith crowds. The press conference draws to a conclusion, and a cheque presentation from Biore is made to a Rett Syndrome, for which it's organizer makes a deeply touching speech that ends up having many in attendance tearing up.

5:20 Vanessa and I wait outside the Luscious Jackson dressing room to do an interview with Kate, the drummer. It's their last day and so this is our last opportunity to speak to her. Sitting in the grass outside, the generators from the busses are our background noise. We sit in a small, tight circle and I start asking questions while Vanessa operates the camera. Kate' rather reserved at first, answering our questions in a fairly serious way, but seems to loosen up after a few minutes. Everyone's going to miss Luscious Jackson a great deal, as they added such a cool vibe to the mainstage line-up, and as Kate makes clear, they've had a wonderful time on the tour, and have noticed the great differences between playing Lilith and playing other festival tours that haven't been so pleasant for them.

7:45 Shawn Colvin takes the mainstage with her guitar and herself only for her second of two dates on the tour. She sings one song to a very quiet, attentive, seated audience who seem to really be enjoying the acoustic set. She is following Luscious Jackson who are quite upbeat and get the crowd up and dancing, so it's impressive that they can so quickly change gears. Shawn tells a funny story about drinking too much Seagram's Seven mixed with Fresca at an Eagles concert when she was nineteen. She describes throwing up on the lawn, and how someone chucked a can at her head. "So be nice to the lawn people up there" she yells in tribute to the crowd on the lawn.

9:25 Sheryl Crow decides to play her huge hit "Santa Monica Blvd." which is not usually part of her set. This seems to please the crowd immensly, and they show their approval by singing along to the very familiar chorus. Sheryl then invites Shawn Colvin out to do a pretty duet that almost seems improvised --- it probably is for the most part, as the artists usually only have time to rehearse such collaborations a couple of times before performing them in front of tens of thousands of people. No worries though, the crowd always go nuts whenever artists get together on stage.

9:40 Sheryl performs her last song or "your last chance to disco before Sarah", as she puts it. It's a pretty rockin' tune. Suddenly members of Luscious Jackson come out with guitars strapped on and start a head banging routine in unison. Quite a funny sight which sends the crowd into screams of delight and laughter.

10:40pm During Sarah's set tonight, there's a special guest appearance by none other than Shawn Colvin's very young daughter. During "Ice Cream", Ash encourages her to come out onstage from behind the side curtain, and she actually steps forward, seemingly unaware of the huge crowd watching her, and Sarah introduces her as a future Liliith veteran.
