Jennifer's Diary

Behind the Scenes in Atlanta, GA - Day Two

3:45

Soul Miner's Daughter opens the village stage as the second Talent Search Winner for Atlanta, GA. A huge crowd has gathered to support them, cheering loudly. It's hard to believe it's a village stage talent search winner and opening act instead of a major performer. As the last song begins the crowd cheers louder, then proceeds to sing along, knowing all of the lyrics.

4:15

At the B-stage, Bif Naked really seems to know how to make a connection with her audience. She addresses them in a friendly, respectful manner, talking to them about the weather and apologizing for potentially bringing rain from Vancouver. She confesses that she and her other band-mate Coco almost fainted from the heat yesterday and since this is the furthest south they have been, their frail Canadian bodies cannot withstand the heat. Bif incites laughter and compassion from the crowd. It's intolerably hot for everyone today, no matter where you're from.

5:30

Backstage behind the dressing rooms, we wait for Jen and Cody of Soul Miners Daughter. We interview them about their Lilith experience as the local talent search winners. They've been together for five years so they're very used to performing for an audience, but they say that the competition aspect was weird for them, likening it to being in a highschool talentshow. However, they have been having a great time since they've been here. It amazed them how many people showed up to get their autographs at the Tower booth and show support for them as a band.

6:05

Because of a torrential downpour, the B-Stage is shut down, and so Dido gets to play on the Mainstage. Their luck is purely circumstantial, but they make the most of it, and put on a outstandeing performance for the very accepting and enthusiastic audience. Dido mentions later in our interview with her that getting to perform their set on the mainstage was the most exciting moment for her during her time on Lilith.

7:15

After talking with Doria Roberts a few times yesterday about doing an interview, it is still drizzling a little bit so our usual outdoor spot for shooting interviews will not work. After investigating several locations, we finally settle on a little tent that has a few stools and a dry table. Doria is one of two local talent search winners for Atlanta (Lilith plays two days here, we have two winners). Her most exciting moment was having Amy Ray of the Indigo Girls ask her to sing with them on "Closer to Fine" and she reveals that The Indigo Girls have been a great source of inspiration to her over the years. She wasn't expecting to win the talent search, so it's all unbelievable to her that all of this is happening.

7:50

We get a call on our radios about a mudslide happening in the middle of the lawn, and a suggestion that we might like to take pictures of the event for the web site. Vanessa goes up the hill to see what's going on, camera in hand, and discovers a very unusual and downright hilarious sight: a hundred or so kids have turned part of the hill at the top of the lawn into a huge mudslide, taking utter pleasure in sliding down in large groups, getting themselves covered in mud from head to toe. At one point, the CNN camera crew make their way up to the site, and the kids go nuts for the camera, for a chance to be on tv in all their muddy glory. The kids end up helping the cameraman up the hill, and after a bit of encouragement, he finally slides down the mudslide, with the camera rolling of course. More mayhem ensues, as the kids rejoice in their accomplishment. Vanessa gets a bunch of pictures for the web site, while miraculously remaning relatively mud-free.

8:05

The rain has delayed the show by twenty minutes, and the Indigo Girls finally come out on stage to a raging audience. They have a few new songs from an album they just finished working on. The fans seem to like the new material - it's a lot heavier than some of their past work but still incorporates the emotional depth. In true Indigo form, several artists join them onstage for various songs. Me'Shell Ndegeocello plays a funky bass part while Sinead O'Connor and Sarah McLachlan grace the stage with their vocal talents.

9:10

Sheryl Crow plays "Mississippi" by Bob Dylan, trying to get the crowd to sing along. They don't seem to know the lyrics, and she changes Mississippi to Atlanta. Next, she invites Sarah to sing along for "Strong Enough". Their voices meld together beautifully, and for some reason it seems to be an appropriate song to do with one another. As the song comes to a close, they are both smiling and then walk over to share a hug before Sarah exits the stage and Sheryl plays her last song for the evening.

10:55

Time for the big finale of "Put a Little Love in your Heart." Tonight, the performance is principally led by the artists from the B and village stages, as Trish Murphy, Bif Naked, and Kashi Tara each sing parts of the song in such a spirited manner, that itıs heartwarming to see them revel in the joy theyıre clearly feeling to be up on that stage, partaking in such an exciting event.
