Jennifer's Diary

Behind the Scenes in Philadelphia, PA July 30 Timeline

3:30 The local talent search winner, "She-Haw" starts the day off with some of their toe-tappin', knee-slappin' bohemian bluegrass. The six members played various stringed instruments, from banjos to electric guitars topped by the two women whose voices lead the ensemble. At this early time there was already a good crowd gathered, enjoying the music.

3:55 Jennifer Kimble returns to the Lilith Fair for this one and only date. Her repetoire includes a funny stringed instruments as well, of which I can't remember the name. I think she referred to it as a cross between a broom and a hammer dulcimer. A few of her fans were lined up right in front singing along as if to old time favorites.

4:30 Kendall Payne is another graduate to the B-stage from the village stage of last year. Her new short haircut seems to have given her some spunky energy. She's really all over the stage this year, dancing and stomping around and generally rockin' out for lack of a better term. I don't know what happened but last year her set was a lot more mellow, quiet, and peaceful. Her new energetic on-stage presence is a pleasantly surprising metamorphosis.

7:00pm Interview with Splashdown on the waterfront with the Philly skyline as backdrop.

7:30pm Interview with She-Haw, the local talent search winner. It starts out with just three of them then as the interview progresses the other guys start wandering over and mumbling answers to some of the questions. "What kind of music would you say it is, I ask". "Blue country soul" seems to be the definitive answer that they all agree on. Sounds good to me.

8:20pm Chrissy Hynde is once again rocking the stage with the Pretenders. She just exudes coolness in the oldest sense of the word. She grabs the mike and yells for Sarah. Nothing happens so she keeps singing, the band keeps playing. About three minutes later Sarah comes sauntering out singing some background vocals. Chrissy jokingly yells out "security" ! Sarah dances to the end of the song then they both take a bow and say "thank you" to the exstatic crowd, that's the last song and exits must be made.
