Behind the Scenes in Buffalo, NY August 1 Canandaigua, NY Timeline 3:30pm At the top of the hill I'm waiting at the village stage for Juliana Nash to start. A group of people are starting to gather. It's an absolutely gorgeous day with weather being so perfect and pleasant, it's like a dream after some of the heat we've been through. There's even a slight breeze blowing through. Just past the venue the Finger Lakes water is a barely visible thin strip of glistening blue. 3:50pm Julianna Nash finishes her set and finds lots of people waiting around to talk to her and have her sign their Lilith cards (pretty postcards with the line-up on the back). She invited people to come talk to her since, not having a new record out right now, she wouldn't be doing a CD signing at Tower. 5:00 The Dance Hall Crashers take to the B-stage, playing ska music - a genre not typically heard on Lilith. The two frontwomen move constantly around the stage, effortlessly trading verses on songs, and keeping up a good level of energy that matches the style of music they play. 6:20 Beth Orton is back on Lilith for the day. This time she's playing the mainstage instead of the B-Stage. She seems completely at ease playing to a larger crowd, even giddy at times, in her very endearing way. She makes a Beatles reference before a song, saying, "Those of you in the back can clap, and those of you in the good seats, just rattle your jewelry." (or something to that affect). She plays mostly songs from her new CD "Central Reservation" but also includes a couple of older songs from her first CD "Trailer Park". Unfortunately, Beth is off again on her own tour tomorrow, so this is her last Lilith show. 6:45 This is Aimee Mann's first date on Lilith. Looking only slightly different from her days with 80's alternative Boston-based group Til Tuesday, with her straight blond hair and thin frame, she plays her rather melancholy though melodic songs to the large crowd gathered. She mentions to the audience that it's a bit difficult for her to switch guitars as her ribs still her from the accident the band was just in, in which their van flipped over a number of times. The crowd receives her warmly, applauding her new songs which they probably haven't heard before. 7:30pm Once again Mya made some little girls' dreams come true. At the end of her set she brought up several girls from the audience. Her dancers picked them out of the crowd to their absolute delight. Afterwards, they all got to go backstage with her for a brief chat. 8:30pm Me'shell Ndegeocello announces that Sarah will come out to sing with her on the final song of the set, which appears on her new album coming out in August. Ash Sood (Sarah's husband) is already out there playing some additional percussion so that makes it a family affair (only Rex is missing). Towards the end of the song, Me'shell talks to the audience about appreciation and not taking things for granted. She tells the crowd to remember that they paid money to come here and be entertained. Someone behind me yells, "shut up and play!" which I find offensive; Me'shell's message is a good one to take to heart. |
