Jennifer's Diary

Behind the Scenes in Holmdel, NJ Aug. 8 timeline

4:40pm Melky Sedeck really shakes it up with her set.  The first sounds heard are a classical piano tune blasted loudly over the main speakers.    Completely unexpectedly and abruptly it rips into a funky beat that's part R&B, part hip-hop iced by her rich, velvety voice rapping and singing.  Definately a refreshing change of pace for the b-stage.

5:00pm kay Hanley, formerly of Letters to Cleo, performs on the village stage doing an acoustical set that the crowd approves of with applaud.  Her hair is now orange and kind of funky, pulled up into loose pony tails and various pins stuck in a seemingly random way.  She has just recently had a baby (only six weeks old!) so it's amazing she has the energy  to perform her lively though acoustic set with only one supporting guitar for her voice and guitar which she manages to carry quite far.

5:20pm The National Anthem opens the setting for Mya, everyone in the audience stands for the duration.  After the anthem finishes her fly guys come running out doing their dance moves and getting the crowd to the appropriate energy level. This is somewhat of a task due to the  post-rain mugginess that is hanging in the air and on people's energy.  Slowly people start getting a little more enlivened.  Ash and Camille (Sarah's band) join Mya onstage for some backup percussion and singing, respectively.  At the end of the set Mya brings up several audience members (mostly comprised of young girls) to dance.  One of our crew members, Deborah Hutichins joins everyone onstage for a little getting down herself.

5:50pm Ash now joins Splashdown on their set adding a funkier, more tribal drum beat to the mix.   They have also been a group that adds a little bit of a different flavor to the lineup.  Their sound is unique to the tour in that they are one of the only groups that brings a "house" feel to the village.  The techo, new-wave flashback sound has a distinct 90s clubbing sound which is enhanced by the almost childlike vocal quality of (can't remember name).  Her scratchy speaking voice belies her singing one in an almost shocking way.  When she thanks the audience for their applause it sounds as if she's about to lose her voice but then belts it right out into another one!

9:00pm Tonight it Sheryl Crow has lots of visitors at varying points in her set.  Ash joins Sheryl's set on "winding road" to play percussion.  Chrissy Hynde sings along to "if it makes you happy".  Sheryl performs a version of "sweet child" by Guns-n-Roses to which the crowd goes mad over.  About midway through Sandra Bernhard comes out to screech along with Sheryl.  Sarah McLachlan comes out for "strong enough", a sort of ballad questioning or challenging someone to be a strong man.
