Jennifer's Diary

Behind the Scenes in Columbus, OH Aug. 10 timeline

4:50pm At the B-stage, I'm chilling out waiting for Patty Griffin.  Some people from the tour have shown up to catch her show too, as she's only here for today and tomorrow.  She's played on past the past two Lilith tours, but I don't really remember her music which makes me think I'm not really into it.  But hey, she's turns out to be amazing and the audience is really into her!  She's got a folky yet hard sort of country feel that is at the same time very soulful.

5:10pm Bree Sharp is singing on the village stage which is located at the complete opposite end of the venue from where the B-stage is, so I have to hurry to get over there.  When I arrive, I see that a very large crowd has gathered at this time to watch and listen to Bree.  She's one of the few artists on the village or B stages who doesn't play guitar herself, but has a backup player behind her.  Bree's songs are fun, and her one about getting David Duchovny to love her is especially hilarious.

5:30pm Deborah Cox rejoins us today and I want to catch her set from the beginning.  The pit is too low from the stage, so I have some trouble shooting her over the other photographers beside me - a good reason to wait until the press have shot the first two songs, which is all they are allowed to.  I feel very luckythat I can show up at any time and have the pit all to myself.

6:30pm I find an excellent spot stage right to shoot the Pretenders.  I have a perfect view of Chrissie in her hot pink, shiny jacket with a fan blowing her dark brown hair all around her heavily lined eyes.  She asks the audience if they have enough beer to which they reply in the affirmative.  "Some things never change" she says of her home state.

7:00pm I have to drag myself away from the Pretenders set (I'm taking in as much as possible since they are about to leave us) to go interview The Fuzzy Comets.  They are comprised of four girls and a guy who says he enjoys playing in bands with women as they are usually more into writing songs than gear.  They've had a great time playing on Lilith and all seem like nice, cool people.  From their description, their musical style sounds very intriguing and I'm sorry I missed their set; they incorporate violin, mandolin, and also have a female drummer - which is unusual, even at Lilith Fair.

7:30pm I see Jocelyn at the B and village stage dressing rooms after the Fuzzy Comets interview.  We decide to head down to the mainstage to watch the Indigo Girls from the audience where we manage to find a couple of empty seats.  This is definitely an "Indigo" audience.  Many of the fans are dancing and singing along to the words.  One guy down the aisle from us is literally belting out the lyrics along with them.
