Jennifer's Diary

Behind the Scenes in Cincinnati, OH Aug. 11 timeline

4:05pm Sarah McLachlan is incognito at the village stage checking out Badi Assad, a Brazilian performer who sings and also uses her mouth, throat and face as instruments.  Her husband, who used to play for Mega Death is the guitarist, plays with her and they are also joined by a bassist and percussionist.  Badi's music is  exotic and eclectic, and seems almost experimental at times, with vocal stylings comparable to those of Yoko Ono.

4:30pm At the B-stage, Patty Griffin rocks pretty hard which I'm not sure the audience is expecting.  There's definitely a punk rock influence to the music, but her voice is distinctly melodic and richly toned in a Patsy Cline sort of way.  Off to the side of the stage  is Amy Ray of the Indigo Girls checking  out Patty's set.  The fans catch sight of her and start yelling out to her.

7:10pm On the side of the mainstage, Sheryl Crow is watching the Pretenders with her dog, Scout, a very sweet, well-mannered golden lab mix.  It's the Pretenders'  last day and everyone knows Sarah is planning on doing something crazy during the song "Middle of the Road".  Quite a few people hang around backstage in anticipation and my job is to make sure that no pictures are taken during this "special" event.

7:25pm Sarah comes out for "middle of the road" and does her usual singing and dancing along that is now a daily happening .  Wearing a glittery red sequined tube top, she makes her way to the center of the stage. Sarah turns around towards Chrissie and lifts her top up, flashing Chrissie (and her drummer coincidedly).  Chrissie quickly covers her eyes in shock, then  falls to her knees, slapping the floor, buckled over with fits of laughter.  She finally gets up while the band tries to continue playing the song, and Chrissie can only say to the crowd, "I saw....I saw....and my God, they were beautiful!!"  Chrissie then barely pulls herself together, and finishes the song, while the crowd remains stunned and amazed by what just happened (though I don't think they saw very much.)

10:55pm During the finale everyone is having a great time, Chrissie and Sarah have big hugging session in the middle of the song - it is the Pretenders last night so the emotions are running strong.  Sarah comes back to the mike teary-eyed but still smiling.  It's very touching to see, as she tells the audience she's crying, then laughs a little and manages to continue on.

11:30pm The going-away party for the Pretenders starts out on the backstage patio where catering had been earlier that day.  70's disco and funk music is blaring, blenders are mixing up margaritas and people are getting down!  There's even some limbo-ing happening, while most of us gather round to watch the brave ones find out how flexible they are.  It's a fun time for all, and a nice way to say goodbye to the Pretenders, whom we've loved having on Lilith.  They most certainly have made a huge impact  musically or personally on the crew and artists.  Their presence will be sorely missed.
