Lilith Fair: Behind The Scenes

Talent Search Stories - Austin
by Carolyn Snell

The world famous Continental Club, which has been opened for 40 years, has seen the likes of Willie Nelson, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and now, the XOOM.com/Lilith Fair Acoustic Talent Search finalists.

This rockabilly joint was packed full of good 'ol songs, including The Barkers' old country flavored "Too Cool To Care" and a tribal-like "Come Down" from Velvet Hammer (whose fans are known to bring their own drums to their shows).

Other highlights of the evening included 18 year old Sara Overall's first performance ever (accompanied on stage by her dad) and Lady Jane Grey, whose lead singer also serves as cello player.

Solo artist, Shara, was crowned runner up and Kitty Gordon, the talk of the town, was named grand prize winner.

The judging panel was just as exciting as the performers themselves. Carrie Benjamin, KAMX midday personality (and formerly of Omaha, NE -- my hometown!), was MC for the night and judges included:

  • Jack Stevens - Program Director, Mix 94.7
  • Chris Riemenschneider - music writer for XL/Austin American Statesman
  • Ginger MacKenzie - singer/songwriter who will be playing the Nashville and Atlanta Lilith Fair dates
  • Trish Murphy - local musician who will be playing the Austin and Dallas Lilith Fair dates
  • Abra Moore - musician who played last year's Lilith Fair and recording a new album now
Note: Carolyn is travelling across North America representing Lilith Fair at the Talent Searches and sending back daily reports.
