Lilith Fair: Behind The Scenes

Talent Search Stories - Charlotte
by Carolyn Snell

If you think you're walking into a large garage when you enter the Tremont Music Hall, you're not far off. The Tremont is a large warehouse-type building, though couches and colored lights make an attmept to give it a more "homey" feeling.

The club is split into two rooms, a larger room where the Talent Search was held and a smaller room where a band (that was to play later in the evening) warmed up while our Lilith Finalists checked in. Although I didn't stick around to hear that band, I do have to thank our friends at XOOM.com for providing ear plugs!

After my stay in New York, I have to admit that it was a great pleasure to encounter Southern hospitality. The "thank you, ma'am's" and "yes, ma'am's" made me believe that these were all sweet young thang's -- now don't get me wrong, all the finalists were pleasant to work with, but when they got on stage, they tore it up!

Highlights of the evening were Angela Motter's catchy "Pleasure and Pain" and an amazing performane by Melissa Reaves, who bore a striking resemblence to Janis Joplin. Melissa took home the grand prize and will play on July 27th, while Kid Sister (who performed an original song that could have easily been written by the Indigo Girls) was the runner up.

Our MC was Jonathan Mauney from WLNK and our judges included:

  • Paige Herman - Marketing Manager, Blockbuster Pavillion
  • Audra Kellogg - Box Office Manager, Blockbuster Pavillion
  • Kim Brandt - Client Rep., Ticketmaster Southeast
  • Kim Cook - Office Manager, Blockbuster Pavillion

Note: Carolyn is travelling across North America representing Lilith Fair at the Talent Searches and sending back daily reports.
