Lilith Fair: Behind The Scenes

Talent Search Stories - Detroit
by Carolyn Snell

St. Andrew's Hall is your typical neighborhood all-purpose club, perfect for mosh pits, wedding receptions, and of course, talent searches.

The music, like the club, was full of stories. Almost all of the finalists offered prologues before launching into their songs.

Audrey Becker's "Little Archaeology" was described as "the point in a relationship when one lover leaves the other in their apartment alone for the first time and wonders what they're doing there."

Jill Jack opened "Full Circle" by explaining "no matter where you go, you'll always come back to where you started from."

"Oil and Water" from Jo Serrapere, the evening's only Detroit native, was "autobiographical" but was far enough removed that she could sing it herself.

The evening's runner up was Hope Orchestra and the two grand prize winners were Kari Newhouse and an elated Jarah Jane, who drove 12 hours from Quebec to perform for the Talent Search.

The MC was Kelly Brown from CIMX and judges included Sonya Mastick, a local musician, Christina Fuoco, a local rock writer, and Andy Patalan, a local music producer.

Note: Carolyn is travelling across North America representing Lilith Fair at the Talent Searches and sending back daily reports.
