Lilith Fair: Behind The Scenes

Talent Search Stories - Minneapolis
by Carolyn Snell

The Minneapolis Talent Search was held in the University of Minnesota's Coffman Union, home of The Whole Music Club.

For the evening, The Whole (past the bowling alley, to the right of the arcade), was a basement-turned-coffeehouse. Normally it features ska and punk acts. Ed Munafo, in charge of The Whole, was pleased to see the usually "testosterone-filled" club charged instead with the spirit of Lilith Fair.

It was the first show at a unversity and the audience seemed to keep a pep rally's energy, celebrating their favorite players' musical victories, of which their were many.

The dreadlocked and barefooted Rachel Ries expressed her love of music through the self-composed, "Pen in Hand," earning her the title of runner up. The grand prize winner, The Marty Winkler Group (featuring Marty Winkler and Kate Bordeaux), performed with sly lyrics and a knowing wink to the audience. Their song, "Ladies Man," dealt with the unique situation detailing when your man leaves you for another man.

With the help of Dino (MC from The Point), Hunt Leigh Price, Jennifer Goforth and Chia Karaoke Arens (judges) and J.R. Bowen (trusty assistant), the evening proved that the music scene in the midwest is far from stagnate.

Note: Carolyn is travelling across North America representing Lilith Fair at the Talent Searches and sending back daily reports.
