Lilith Fair: Behind The Scenes

Talent Search Stories - New York City
by Carolyn Snell

The minute I walked into the Westbeth Theatre Company, I felt like I should be taking some sort of acting classes (I was in New York, how could I not think of "Fame?").

The Westbeth is nestled in Greenwich Village and is an intimate community theatre. The "cafe" area where the artists hung out and waited until it was their turn to grace the stage, was dressed in flowered wallpaper, mauve drapes and white votive candles, similar to an old-fashioned sitting room.

With the help of Breast Cancer Fund volunteers and Jesse Goodman (Admaster for our sponsor, XOOM.com) information on Breast Cancer and XOOM.com/Lilith Fair t-shirts were distributed to the crowd that gathered to watch members of New York's diverse music scene.

The bongo player for Kimberly Werst, one of the 20 finalists, even donned a pastel plaid skirt and a baby doll XOOM.com/Lilith Fair Acoustic Talent Search t-shirt!

Our lucky winners for the New York Talent Search were Amy Fairchild (to play Aug. 6 at Jones Beach), Rachel Sage (to play Aug. 7 at the PNC Bank Arts Center) and the runner up was Jenny Bruce.

The MC to keep the crowd going was Z-100's (on the Z Morning Zoo) own, Greg T. "The Frat Boy." Our qualified judging panel included:

  • Jim Steen, Director of Marketing, PNC Bank Arts Center
  • Randy Henner, Executive Vice President, DelznerSlater and Head of Talent Buying, New York City Clubs
  • Ari Martin, Nettwerk Records
  • Scotty B., Z-100 personality, Z Morning Zoo

Note: Carolyn is travelling across North America representing Lilith Fair at the Talent Searches and sending back daily reports.
